The work can be used either as a stand-alone reference or as a companion to the two-volume Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawai‘i. -- Hawaiian Plant Life has been written with both the layperson and professional interested in Hawai‘i’s natural history and flora in mind. In addition to significant text describing landforms and vegetation, the evolution of Hawaiian flora, and the conservation of native species, the book includes almost 875 color photographs illustrating nearly two-thirds of native Hawaiian plant species as well as a concise description of each genus and species shown. The work can be used either as a stand-alone reference or as a companion to the two-volume Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawai‘i. Learning more about threatened and endangered plants is essential to conserving them, and there is no more endangered flora in the world today than that of the Hawaiian Islands. Striking species complexes such as the silverswords and the remarkable lobeliads represent unique stories of adaptive radiation that make the Hawai‘i a living laboratory for evolution. Public appreciation for Hawaiian biodiversity requires outreach and education that will determine the future conservation of this rich heritage, and Hawaiian Plant Life has been designed to help fill that need.

The Hawaiian islands, isolated by thousands of miles of ocean for millions of years, posses a unique assemblage of native flowers and plants. This text describes more than 130 indigenous and endemic species of Hawaiian plants, their characteristics and habitats, and how they came to be. The photographs aim to provide an easy and accurate means of recognizing a given plant and serve as a permanent record of the Hawaiian islands' fast-disappearing native flora.

"Whence, and by what means did these seeds reach these islands? In some instances the seeds were blown along in the track of hurricanes, which carried them great distances. Migratory birds, as wells as other birds, which were swept along before severe storms, doubtless brought some seeds on their feet, and also attached to their feathers. Driftwood may have brought certain seeds whose germinating qualitities survived immersion in sea water, and ocean currents may have brought bouyant seeds." -- Book Introduction Excerpt

Eloquent, practical and wise, this book by one of the world’s most important scientists—and two time Pulitzer Prize winner—should be read and studied by anyone concerned with the fate of the natural world. It "makes one thing clear ... we know what we do, and we have a choice" (The New York Times Book Review). E.O. Wilson assesses the precarious state of our environment, examining the mass extinctions occurring in our time and the natural treasures we are about to lose forever. Yet, rather than eschewing doomsday prophesies, he spells out a specific plan to save our world while there is still time. His vision is a hopeful one, as economically sound as it is environmentally necessary.

Hiking in the forests of Hawai'i offers many rewards. Walking along our mountain paths is an excellent form of healthy exercise. The scenic beauty of the Hawaiian landscape is spectacular and diverse, and there are many colorful, individual organisms that inhabit the forest environments. Some people who walk the forest trails are concerned primarily with the challenge of climbing to the top of a peak or crossing the mountain range. These may be strong incentives for adventure, but many of us have additional interests in the surrounding plant life. We may want to know the local and scientific names of the various plants, as well as where they came from, how they got here, why they are where they are, and for what purposes they are (or were) used. Many botanists prefer line drawings to photographs because such drawings can be more explicit in their presentation of botanical information. Positive identification, in fact, often requires very exacting inspection of floral parts along with coordinated referral to botanical "keys." However, this field guide is for the beginner who appreciates photography. Those who wish to pursue the interesting field of Hawaiian botany in greater depth can use the short bibliography at the end to aid you on your way. Have fun!
