A First Course in Biostatistics Unexpected Raluca Balan • Gilles Lamothe University of Ottawa, Canada NEW JERSEY • LONDON • SINGAPORE • BEIJING • SHANGHAI • HONG KONG • TAIPEI • CHENNAI World Scientific World Scientific Publishing Co. -- Statistical reasoning and modeling are of critical importance to modern biology. This textbook introduces fundamental concepts from probability and statistics which will pave the way for the student of biology to become a well-rounded scientist. No previous study of probability or statistics is assumed. Calculus topics are not used extensively in this book, though some integration and differentiation are expected. The calculus prerequisite is primarily intended to assure a certain level of mathematical maturity. This book puts emphasis on examples, which are presented to motivate the theory. The presentation style is concise and self-contained, briefly including the mathematical elements that are needed for studying probability and statistics. The examples are relevant to students in the life sciences with interests in genetics, biology, ecology, health, etc. We believe that aspects of probability theory are of biological interest and that probability underlies the theory of inferential statistics. Thus, we place an equal emphasis on probability and statistics which are both essential for solving and understanding many types of biological problems.

"You can't step in the same river twice." "Dogs bark at what they don't understand." "The doctor inflicts pain to cure suffering." The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus was famous for his brilliant and provocative sayings. Today, more than 2,500 years after they were written, his ideas about life, nature, and the cosmos remain as startlingly original as ever. In Expect the Unexpected (Or You Won't Find It), Roger von Oech uses thirty of Heraclitus' epigrams as springboards to dazzling creativity. Treating each saying as an inexhaustible source of inspiration, he supplies amusing anecdotes, mind-bending riddles, hidden jokes, and intriguing questions designed to topple old habits of thought and fire the imagination. Drawing on a cornucopia of examples from science, business, and the history of invention, as well as from literature (Through the Looking Glass) and popular culture (The Twilight Zone), von Oech shows you how to reverse your expectations, turn change to your advantage, create powerful metaphors, and avoid the pitfalls of "moreness" -- that is, assuming that more is automatically better -- to find novel solutions to even the most intractable problems. Anyone searching for new approaches to problem solving -- from managers to students to artists -- will find in this book an invaluable tool. Whether you read it from start to finish as a creativity workbook, treat each insight as a morning meditation, or consult the book as a daily oracle, Expect the Unexpected offers a welcome jolt to the imagination.

“Bradley is an inspiration and a leader. He reminds each of us that we too can become consistent and unstoppable.” — Deanne Welsh Brendon Burchard said, "You need, more than anything else, daily momentum. It's the secret of all life happiness." "Secret of all life happiness?" Whoa. Sounds pretty good to me. Just a little "daily momentum"? No problem, right? But what if you're stuck? Maybe you've been trying to break through but just can't seem to get ahead. Every day seems like Groundhog Day: the same disappointment as yesterday. Or worse: one step forward and two steps back. Ugh. "Every Single Day" offers a simple prescription for building daily momentum that leads to true and powerful change that lasts. If you really want it, that is. HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE? HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT SUCCESS? Bradley Charbonneau's life drastically changed when, on Nov. 1, 2012, he accepted a challenge to Write Every Day for a month. What happened next changed his life in ways he could have never imagined. "Every Single Day" tells his story--and teaches you how to achieve what you're after. If you’re ready to do the same, get your copy of “Every Single Day” now. Because you are after something. You know it. We all know it. I'm rooting for you.

He wrote on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, and allegories—first carefully turning them inside out. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius". This early work by G. K. Chesterton was originally published in 1905. Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London in 1874. He studied at the Slade School of Art, and upon graduating began to work as a freelance journalist. Over the course of his life, his literary output was incredibly diverse and highly prolific, ranging from philosophy and ontology to art criticism and detective fiction. However, he is probably best-remembered for his Christian apologetics, most notably in Orthodoxy (1908) and The Everlasting Man (1925). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Nothing more strangely indicates an enormous and silent evil of modern society than the extraordinary use which is made nowadays of the word "orthodox." In former days the heretic was proud of not being a heretic. It was the kingdoms of the world and the police and the judges who were heretics. He was orthodox. He had no pride in having rebelled against them; they had rebelled against him. The armies with their cruel security, the kings with their cold faces, the decorous processes of State, the reasonable processes of law—all these like sheep had gone astray. The man was proud of being orthodox, was proud of being right.
