When Digby pressed his offers to support Clodius's laboratory, Clodius—at least ... -- Winner of the 2005 Pfizer Prize from the History of Science Society. What actually took place in the private laboratory of a mid-seventeenth century alchemist? How did he direct his quest after the secrets of Nature? What instruments and theoretical principles did he employ? Using, as their guide, the previously misunderstood interactions between Robert Boyle, widely known as "the father of chemistry," and George Starkey, an alchemist and the most prominent American scientific writer before Benjamin Franklin as their guide, Newman and Principe reveal the hitherto hidden laboratory operations of a famous alchemist and argue that many of the principles and practices characteristic of modern chemistry derive from alchemy. By analyzing Starkey's extraordinary laboratory notebooks, the authors show how this American "chymist" translated the wildly figurative writings of traditional alchemy into quantitative, carefully reasoned laboratory practice—and then encoded his own work in allegorical, secretive treatises under the name of Eirenaeus Philalethes. The intriguing "mystic" Joan Baptista Van Helmont—a favorite of Starkey, Boyle, and even of Lavoisier—emerges from this study as a surprisingly central figure in seventeenth-century "chymistry." A common emphasis on quantification, material production, and analysis/synthesis, the authors argue, illustrates a continuity of goals and practices from late medieval alchemy down to and beyond the Chemical Revolution. For anyone who wants to understand how alchemy was actually practiced during the Scientific Revolution and what it contributed to the development of modern chemistry, Alchemy Tried in the Fire will be a veritable philosopher's stone.

Can terminal illness ever be fun? At the peak of his career as an eco-architect, Christopher Day developed Motor Neurone (Lou Gehrig's) Disease. Initially, the future seemed bleak, but as the illness progressed, his attitude changed. The more things went wrong, the more hilarious life became. He began to appreciate the gifts illness has brought. (my) Dying is Fun is for anyone, or anyone who knows anyone, who might one day die. Especially, it's for anyone who needs to laugh. This book transforms disability and dying into a testament for life. "This is a unique work. Although suffering from one of the most severe of degenerative diseases, the fire of his creative spirit is very inspiring. His writing, laced with side-splitting humour, is as vivid as ever. So witty, acute in observation, and wise, that I still chortle while remembering scenes read from the first draft three years ago. It is also deeply poignant. A valuable book to share with others - a masterpiece." Sarida Brown, Cadeceus "When my father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, the devastating effects this terminal illness [has] arrived in our home. However, MND also seems to evoke the best in the human spirit in a positive way... This book is truly inspirational and fundamentally human in its words and spirit. As an observation on dying it is really a lesson in life and I can warmly recommend it." Lembit opik, President, Motor Neurone Disease Association "Christopher Day is able to maintain his positive outlook and a sense of humour in the depth of adversity. [He] has transformed the curse of his terminal illness into a spiritual gift. This is truly an inspiring book." Satish Kumar, Resurgence "Essential reading for all health and social care providers." Thomas Parkison Warne life's work was to write this book. When he was twenty-one years old, he had an experience. "Gently, quietly, I know not when it came, the moment, nor when it departed...its overshadowing. The impression I had received remained with me, as clay under a seal (Job 38:14). This happening, the experience, the knowing of it, long it was with me. The course of the righteous is like morning light, growing brighter till it is broad day. That which I had to offer was the only thing I had. It represented the only thing I had. It represented the only thing wanted to do. I would go as far as I could. I would work it out as best I could. Death would be the only thing that would stop my effort and end my hope of doing it. My thought was that I had something. I believed that." "Thou hast beset me behind and before and laid thine hand upon me" (Psalm 139:5). "I had one thing, the key to all this. I believed that what I had received came from God. It had come upon me. What I could see, its appeal-the faith I had-I was taken up with it and filled with the doing of it."
