What is the connection between autism and addiction? Why are individuals with autism more likely to develop a substance use disorder than the general population? Until recently, substance use disorder (SUD) was considered rare among those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This book brings together current research and personal accounts from individuals with autism and their supports. It explores why addiction is more common among individuals with ASD and investigates how addiction and autism affect one another. The authors also provide strategies for supporting people with both ASD and SUD.

Advisory groups have played an essential role in improving the school climate and conditions for young adolescents in schools. How middle school decision makers go about the process of designing or re-designing an advisory program needs to be considered. A discussion is presented of the background information that helps define advisories. It describes some essential elements in the design of an advisory program, proposes strategies for planners to use in facilitating decision making, and explores possible future directions and alternative strategies for achieving the goals of advisory programs. Chapter 1 looks at the impetus and chronology of advisory programs. Chapter 2 presents a nomenclature to facilitate a discussion about advisory programs. The decision-making process described in Chapter 3 presents a card-sorting activity that allows the planner to articulate their preconceived notions about potential goals, activities, and outcomes of an advisory program. Chapter 4 suggests that students' need for personal and social guidance may be addressed in ways other than what has traditionally been called advisor/advisee. Considering alternative ways can enhance the processes of planning, collaborative decision making, and creative construction that can be the key to success for a program. (Contains 103 references.) Bringing Community to the Adult ESL Classroom

Using the concept of community building as a framework, this volume summarizes and updates readers on the state of adult English as a second language (ESL) education in the United States. It provides a complete description of this population of learners and their learning needs. The various chapters discuss possibilities for community building in the adult ESL classroom, combining research, theory, and practice. Community building is not a new topic; we often discuss it informally with our colleagues and students. However, scant written material exists-with a focus on adult ESL-documenting how it happens or reconciling theory with practitioners' experiences. In this volume, several practitioners and researchers explain the ways in which they use community-building principles in adult ESL settings. The authors' descriptions of applications of community-building principles can help other adult educators implement these ideas in their teaching practice. This is the 121st volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education is an indispensable series that explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.
Rediscovering the Democratic Purposes of Education

Education theorists, demonstrating that a democratically informed education is not an outmoded idea, establish intellectual foundations for revitalizing American schools and offer ideas for how the educational process can become more democratic. An initial series of articles reexamines the original premise of American education as articulated by thinkers like Jefferson and Dewey. A second set identifies flaws in how schools are currently governed and offers models for change. The final group analyzes the implications for education posed by value conflicts arising over the twin strands of a democracy: socialization and governance.
